Dear Members and Friends of the Commonwealth Veterinary Association,
As 2024 draws to a close, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the collective efforts of our members across the Commonwealth. This year has been a remarkable journey of innovation, collaboration, and resilience. From tackling critical issues in animal health to fostering professional growth and sharing knowledge, we have achieved milestones that highlight the strength and dedication of our veterinary community.

Key Highlights of 2024
A Global Gathering in Arusha
This year’s 42nd TVA International Scientific Conference, held in collaboration with the Tanzania Veterinary Association, was a resounding success. Set against the stunning backdrop of Arusha, Tanzania, the conference attracted delegates from over 30 countries. With the theme “Eradicating Livestock Diseases to Enhance Productivity and Facilitate Trade”, experts shared groundbreaking research, practical solutions, and visionary ideas to combat livestock diseases and bolster productivity.
Key sessions included:
- Innovations in vaccine development.
- Sustainable disease control strategies.
- The role of trade in promoting veterinary health.

Pan-Commonwealth Virtual Conference
Breaking geographical barriers, the Pan-Commonwealth Virtual Conference brought together veterinary professionals from across the globe for an engaging discussion on Sustainable Food and Farming Practices. Highlights included:
- Insights into reducing environmental footprints in livestock production.
- Strategies for improving food security.
- Interactive panels with industry leaders and researchers.
This virtual platform exemplified how technology can unite us, enabling the exchange of ideas and fostering collaboration on a global scale.
We are also excited to announce that the Pan-Commonwealth Veterinary Conference 2025 will be held in Jamaica this November. This highly anticipated event promises to bring together a vibrant mix of professionals, researchers, and policymakers to tackle pressing issues in veterinary science while enjoying the rich culture and scenery of Jamaica. Save the date!
Welcome to New Leadership
We are thrilled to announce the appointment of several new CVA Delegates and team members who joined us in 2024:
- Dr. Ngwisha Joshua (Zambia) is our new Communications Coordinator, bringing exceptional organizational and communication skills to strengthen our outreach.
- Dr. Wesley Champo (Zambia), a dynamic advocate for animal health, joins as the CVA Delegate for Zambia.
- Dr. Moses Arokoyo (Nigeria) strengthens our West African representation with his extensive expertise in veterinary medicine.
- Dr. Helen Mitin (Malaysia), a strong voice for Southeast Asia, adds her unique perspective to our global network.
- Dr. Sally Compton (United Kingdom), an expert in animal welfare and public health, joins as the CVA Delegate for the UK.
- Dr. Pallegama (Sri Lanka) brings valuable insights into advancing veterinary education and research in South Asia.
Their fresh perspectives and dedication will be invaluable as we work to advance veterinary science across the Commonwealth.
Celebrating Creativity: CVA Photography Competition
Our annual CVA Photography Competition concluded with a stunning showcase of talent. The winning entry was submitted by Joel Itangirubuntu of Rwanda for his captivating photo with the caption: “Amidst the golden greenland, a friendship blooms where words are silent but hearts converse.” This breathtaking image perfectly encapsulates the essence of veterinary science and the bonds we share with animals.

In Memoriam: Honoring Our Heroes
This year, we mourned the loss of two esteemed colleagues who left an indelible mark on the veterinary profession:
- Dr. Sripad Sosale (Asia Oceania), whose unwavering commitment to improving animal health inspired many.
- Dr. S. Timol (Mauritius) and Dr. A. A. Ramzee (Pakistan), who contributed significantly to advancing veterinary practices in their respective regions.
Their legacies will continue to inspire us. May their souls rest in peace.
