Inauguration of Animal Welfare Centre and International Workshop on Animal Welfare Research at Veterinary College, Hassan

With the support of KVAFSU and CVA and financial support from Open Philanthropy an Animal Welfare Research Centre was inaugurated at the Department of Livestock Production Management Veterinary College, Hassan on 5 February 2025 with the objective of carrying out research on animal welfare, behaviour, and ethics in farm animals.

An International Workshop on Animal Welfare Research was organized at the Veterinary College, Hassan on 5 and 6 February 2025. A total of 60 faculty and postgraduate students from various veterinary colleges of KVAFSU and Veterinarians from the State Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Government of Karnataka, participated in the two-day conference.

The scientific programme of the conference was divided into two sessions. The first session was on Animal Welfare Research, Standard Setting and Capacity Building and was Chaired by Dr S. Abdul Rahman, Executive Director, CVA and Co-Chaired by Dr S. Yathiraj, Regional Coordinator, CVA Asian Region.

The keynote address on Climate Change and Animal Welfare was presented by Dr Peter Thornber, Australia, followed by Dr Kate Littin from New Zealand who spoke on One Welfare Being kind to Animals, Nature and Community. This was followed by a presentation by Dr Vivek Patel, Bangalore on Animal Welfare Research and Education in India.
